For the North American market, the XP130 series Yaris was released in the fourth quarter of 2011, for the 2012 model year, under the Yaris Liftback name. In 1906 all three tunnels under the river were closed for construction, cutting cable service to the North and West. In 1896 the first downtown electrification was permitted, in 1906 all cable service was converted to electric traction. The S-Hybrid system is entirely contained within the engine compartment and does not require a traction battery. This enables the open road tolling system to automatically compute the carpool or solo driver toll. There are two variants of these limited-production Vitz/Yaris. Some diesel engines from six to 16 cylinders are started by means of a hydraulic motor. The third generation Yaris/Vitz entered production in Toyota Motor Manufacturing France plant in June 2011 and was launched in September of the same year. The first variant was launched in August 2013, this model is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE Turbo engine (similar engine that powered the previous generations Vitz RS/Yaris T-Sport Turbo). This engine produces 112 kW (150 hp; 152 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 206 N⋅m (152 lb⋅ft; 21.0 kg⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
All second generation Pilots used a new J35Z4 3.5-liter V6 i-VTEC engine producing 250 hp (186 kW; 253 PS) SAE net at 5700 rpm and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m) of torque at 4800 rpm. Offered in both three- and five-door hatchback styles, the Yaris Liftback offered only the previous generation's 1.5-litre engine with a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. The Australian Yaris comes in either a 1.3-litre or 1.5-litre powered petrol engine. The XP130 series Yaris for the Australian market was revealed at the July 2011 Australian International Motor Show held in Melbourne. In early 2019, the Mazda2-based Yaris hatchback debuted at the 2019 New York International Auto Show and replaced the Yaris Liftback in both countries. In spite of being a show floor demonstration system, the system was quite advanced compared to most PRT systems then under study. Airbags for passenger cars were introduced in the United States in the 1970s. When seat-belt usage rates in the country were quite low compared to modern-day, Ford built experimental cars with airbags in 1971. Allstate operated a fleet of 200 Mercury Montereys and showed the reliability of airbags as well as their operation in crash testing, which also was promoted by the insurance company in popular magazine advertisements.
