The 9-1-1 center is provided with latitude and longitude from the radio's GPS receiver. When power is distributed to all four wheels, a third or 'center' differential can be used to distribute power between the front and rear axles. The torque split of that differential may be fixed or variable depending on the type of center differential. Accordingly, 4×2 means a four-wheel vehicle that transmits engine torque to only two axle ends: the front two in front-wheel drive or the rear two in rear-wheel drive. When referring to heavy vehicles, the term is increasingly applied to mean "permanent multiple-wheel drive" on 2×2, 4×4, 6×6, or 8×8 drive-train systems that include a differential between the front and rear drive shafts. The definition notes that part-time systems may have a low range. The definition does not address the inclusion or exclusion of a low-range gear. The differential does this by distributing angular force (in the form of torque) evenly, while distributing angular velocity (turning speed) such that the average for the two output shafts is equal to that of the differential ring gear. This allows one driveshaft to independently drive two output shafts, axles that go from the differential to the wheel, at different speeds.
SAE International's standard J1952 recommends only the term "all-wheel drive" with additional subclassifications that cover all types of AWD/4WD/4x4 systems found on production vehicles. According to the SAE International standard J1952, AWD is the preferred term for all the systems described above. In practice, users of security systems may intentionally reduce the effectiveness of an anti-theft system to increase its usability (see also: Password). In October 2007, the FRES SOSI contract was awarded to a joint team of Thales and Boeing. Six main elements of the SOSI role were: programme management; systems of systems engineering and integration; alliance development and management; development of the MoD's SOSI competence; through-life capability management; and through-life technology management.
Since then, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory has been researching electric armour, with the view of ultimately integrating it into the FRES design. In June 2007, the then Minister of State for Defence Equipment and Support, Lord Drayson, announced that three vehicles had been selected for trials to determine the utility vehicle design for FRES UV. Some exceptions are occasionally made for individual vehicles. To prevent this, the wheels are allowed to turn at different speeds using a mechanical or hydraulic differential. A four-wheel drive, also called 4×4 ("four by four") or 4WD, is a two-axled vehicle drivetrain capable of providing torque to all of its wheels simultaneously. In typical instances, their manifolds routed straight out the front wheel wells posing an asphyxiation risk to the race driver, "lake pipes" were fashioned, extending from the header flange along the rocker panels, bottom side of the vehicle, beneath the doors, thus allowing (1) suspension tuners a lower ride height sufficient for land speed record attempts, and (2) engine tuners ease and flexibility of interchanging different exhaust manifolds without hoisting the vehicle, thus precluding having to wrench undercarriage of the vehicle.
